Austral Grass Tree's (Xanthorrhoea australis)
Growing in heathland and woodland, these slow‑growing sculptural plants are an interesting feature in this district. They have thick, woody trunks or butts, topped by tufts of narrow green leaves, and can be skirted with old dead brown leaves if not burnt. The long, fine, stiff bluish‑green leaves are rhombic in cross‑section and are up to 3mm wide. Flowering time is from winter to summer, but they rarely flower except after fire. The flower spike, which bears masses of creamy‑white strongly scented flowers, is up to 2.5m long on a strong supporting stem that is 30–50cm long. This particular area had recently been burnt creating a mass flowering display.
